When asked how I got started painting and drawing, it all began so long ago, it’s really hard to pinpoint.  Of course, I’ve learned a lot from workshops and lessons, but ever since I could hold a crayon, I’ve loved color and attempting to capture an image.  That love affair has grown and morphed over the years… from crayons and pencil sketching to developing techniques in watercolor, acrylic & oils.  I enjoy the whole creative process, be it sketching, painting, matting & framing, even small sculpture items.  My hands must need to stay busy in order to keep me out of trouble.

I began painting with watercolors in my mid-thirties and have broadened my horizons to acrylics, oils and gouache.  Largely, my paintings consist of landscapes that I build into a collection for each year’s Shorescapes calendar.  That all started when a co-worker suggested I use my paintings to create a calendar.  Well, I uploaded the layout and images at a local pharmacy kiosk and gave them as Christmas presents to close friends and family.  The rest, as they say, is history.  With the help of Copy Central, my local print shop, color prints and note cards can be created from my originals.

Living and working in Worcester County, Maryland provides lots of subject material and inspiration.  The area is rich in history and tradition; for generations families have built lives and legacies working the land and waters of the Eastern Shore.  I discovered my own ancestors settled here before Maryland became an official state.  When we’re rooted in an area, I believe it’s a privilege to highlight the things we see as we see them.  In effect, giving others a view from our front porch.   Art is subjective, after all.  Not everyone likes the same thing; but as artists, we bring our perspectives and grow and develop our skills.  In doing so, we get to share with each other, we learn, we teach, we get inspired and we can in turn inspire… pass the torch, fan the flame, spread the passions that drive us.  When we share something we’re passionate about, it’s contagious!

Someone once said “Passion is no substitute for knowledge and experience.”  And I am by no means schooled in fine art; however, it is my aim to continually create, paint, practice and grow in my craft.  I learn a lot through trial and error, but there is value in every lesson!  Truly, I believe God has given me this passion, both as a means of therapy and as a ministry.  He has opened doors I never would have thought possible and presented opportunities to me beyond my wildest dreams.  I will continue to follow His lead and experience the journey He has planned for me!

Blessings,

Beth

Beth and her husband Stuart live on the family farm in Bishopville with their family and critters.  She attributes her growth and development as an artist to the love and support of her family and friends and her faith in Jesus Christ.  With these she’s motivated to embrace the possibilities and paint her dreams.
